Growing Dahlias

I’m writing this to those of you who can’t take your eyes off a fresh bouquet of flowers. There is goodness in there. Do you believe that? Of course, we believe they are beautiful, but goodness and beauty go hand-in-hand somehow. I’ve seen eyes light up, curiosity bloom, and a dreary space come alive when a fresh bouquet of flowers shows up. And I may have found the Queen of Goodness and Beauty in the dahlia!

I just can’t get enough of these flowers!

The first dahlia bloom I saw was in a book. Floret Farm’s Cut Flower Garden by Erin Benzakein and Julie Chai. Each book these authors put out ended up on my bookcase. I read Discovering Dahlias (over and over) and set my sights on a dahlia farm. Why not? I had the space, the summers, and the passion that was growing the more I learned about these blooms.

The whole idea seemed to fit well with our mission to grow and share. Not sharing for free, but sharing for beauty, hope and joy.

Last season we planted 1600 dahlia tubers. And it was a dream! I made market bouquets, bridal bouquets, hosted flower bars, filled buckets, and walked through “the dream” each morning with my coffee cup in hand.

At the end of the season, we ended up with 1600 clumps of tubers that needed washing, drying, storing, dividing, and sharing. It’s a process for sure! But we are learning a lot and are happy to share some Tips for Growing Dahlias with you.
